Job Responsibilities

Performs manual labor and uses hand tools in laying pipes, building catch basins, pouring concrete for curbs, sidewalks and raised median, cleaning ditches, repairing shoulders, clearing right-of-ways, paving driveways, patching potholes and making base repairs. Flags traffic in work zones during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Trains in the operation of a motor grader, machining shoulders, spreading and leveling materials in order to ensure proper drainage of roadway. Trains in the operation of a skid steer and various attachments including the milling head, broom and gyro trac.Trains in the operation of a backhoe in cleaning ditches and placing pipe. Operates 5 to 10 yard standard dump truck for hauling construction materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, pipe and debris. Trains in the operation of front-end loaders and self-propelled belt loaders. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance. Assists in after hour emergencies including removing fallen trees, providing traffic control for accidents, etc. Assists in the removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges or storm debris caused by hazardous weather such as hurricanes or tornadoes. When crew is in an "on-call" status, employee is available 24 hours a day. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A 10th grade education and two and one-half (2.5) years of related trades experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations. A valid motor vehicle license is required. Necessary Special Requirement: Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
