SC Department of Public Safety Highway Maintenance Worker II/3 Heavy Equipment Operator (61032180) in Cherokee County, South Carolina
Under limited supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Operates motorized equipment used in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges or the movement of materials and supplies used to perform these maintenance activities. Operates complex motorized equipment on a county vegetation crew. Operates both medium and heavy equipment such as tractor with batwing mowers, combination tractor with side mounted mowers, skid steers, and slope mowers in roadside and right-of-way vegetation management operations. Performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as the removing fallen trees from roadway, cutting dead trees on right-of-way and low hanging limbs over roadway. May assist with directing mowing and right-a-way clearing operations. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers, and lowboy truck tractor for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations. Assists with instructing crew members daily in safety practices. Practices such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or when working with hazardous material and waste. Set up traffic control according to SCMUTCD Standards to warn motorist of road work ahead. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as HMMS and the maintenance requests and complaints forms. Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended hours or 12- hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations. Requires a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position. Must also obtain the tanker and fifth-wheel endorsement on your CDL within six months of placement within position.
