SC Department of Public Safety Highway Maintenance Worker 2C (61033053) in Kershaw County, South Carolina

Assists in the installation of driveways using hand tools, hand tamp, place aggregates, remove mailboxes, and reinstall and help place large sections of pipe. Assists in the replacement or repair to steel guardrail requiring employee to be able to work with small tools and to be physically able to dig holes for guardrail posts, etc. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake, and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Trains to operate heavier equipment (combination front-end loader and backhoe). Trains to operate ten-wheel tandem and operates 5 yard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance. Operates a standard dump truck with snow plow and sand spreader attachment to remove snow and ice from the highways and bridges and assists during other emergencies. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Conducts and documents pre-trip inspections. Performs other related job duties as requested or assigned by supervisor.

This position is located in District 1 - Kershaw Maintenance

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

A 10th grade education and one and one-half (1.5) years of related trades experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.

A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Note: This position requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. However, applicants without a Class A Commercial Driver's License will be considered if no qualified applicants with a Class A Commercial Driver's License are available.

Class A Commercial Driver's License must be attained within six (6) months of placement in the position.

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
