SC Department of Public Safety Skilled Trades Worker in Richland County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

Under general to light supervision, maintains the existing physical facilities of the Agency, in the most cost-effective manner possible. Notifies supervisor of unsafe conditions or repairs needed outside of current skill level. Participates in special projects and light construction within the department. Performs semi-skilled level trade duties and assist other trades workers in performing maintenance duties. Provides for the general maintenance and repair of the agency's facilities in the most cost-effective manner possible. Performs multiple professional trade functions as needed. To include the following: general carpentry work, repairs and minor construction; applying paint and drywall repairs; light plumbing repairs and fixture installation; roof and building repairs; forming, pouring, and finishing concrete; installs and/or repairs locks or access control systems; provide for preventative maintenance; ability to perform heavy manual labor; light electrical repairs, fixture install, outlet and switch replacement, light bulb replacement, low voltage work. Participates in or works independently on special projects within the department. Independently or with others, performs light construction work as needed. Supervises SCDC inmates as needed. Prepares and submits material requests and work orders. Remains abreast on new techniques, procedures, and equipment in the Maintenance Field. Responds to 24-hour emergency call back requests as scheduled. Works outside of traditional hours as needed. Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisors.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: Trades experience that is directly related to the area of employment.

Agency Requirements: A high school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Formal education in area of employment can replace up to two (2) years of experience. General understanding of light construction procedures and industry practices. Systematic approach to special projects as assigned. Employee must have and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrate proficient ability to use all tools, equipment, and materials associated with general building maintenance, light construction, and repairs. Must have knowledge of general construction practices and procedures; general knowledge of the plumbing, HVAC, and electrical trades. Must be able to interpret plans and specifications as it applies to special projects assigned. Employee must have and maintain valid drivers license. Employee will work independently, with others, or oversee others as assigned. Must be able to perform heavy manual labor. Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment. Receives general supervision from the Facility's Maintenance Manager II and Maintenance Manager I. Employee must possess sufficient knowledge to make on the spot, independent judgments regarding general building maintenance, light construction, and repairs. Employee will consult with Supervisor for direction as needed. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted. Must be willing to work with the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) inmates and must be willing to work at night or in inclement weather as needed. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided
