KapStone Container Corporation Health, Safety & Environmental Manager in Summerville, South Carolina

The site HSE Manager is responsible for being the Lumber Mill safety champion implementing and administering Safety, Health, and Environmental (HSE) policies and practices. The HSE Manager has responsibility for managing hazardous risk exposure at a complex lumber mill facility and ensuring the safe use of dangerous equipment. This role must ensure compliance with Kapstone, local, state and federal government Safety, Health and Environmental regulations and requirements.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Actively support the development, documentation, training and implementation of Kapstone HSE policies and procedures that are designed to not only meet governmental standards but achieve best in industry performance.

  • Conduct, teach and mentor others on HSE audits, behavior observations, inspections, risk assessments and root cause analysis to ensure continuous improvement of the HSE Management System.

  • Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure HSE results and provide necessary information to local management, corporate and governmental agencies.

  • Lead environmental efforts by assisting with obtaining permits, developing plans to resolve issues and ensuring that appropriate documentation is maintained, such as Safety Data Sheets, etc.

  • Act as the local HSE expert providing specific subject matter training and advice to managers, employees and contractors.

  • Oversee the Emergency Response Program.

  • Participate in critical Corporate Activities such as audits, committees and work teams, as appropriate.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (Safety, Environmental, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Science, or Engineering) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 3-5 years' of progressive HSE experience to include manufacturing site responsibility.

  • Experience working with government regulators and a thorough knowledge of federal, state & local government HSE regulations (OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, EPA, etc.).

  • Experience implementing HSE Management Systems and Behavior Based Safety Observation Programs.

  • Ability to influence others to perform their jobs safely and create a culture of safety.

  • Strong leadership and training skills.

  • Strong analytical skills including Root Cause & Risk Analysis methodologies.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, maintain attention to detail and recognize time constraints.

  • Professional HSE Designation (CSP, CIH, etc.) preferred.

  • AED/CPR/basic First Aid certifications preferred.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software programs.
