SC Department of Public Safety Highway Maintenance Worker II/2C (61033461) in York County, South Carolina

Assists journeyman level trades specialist workers in performing repairs, maintenance or construction; may operate motorized equipment used in the maintenance of highways and bridges or the movement of materials, supplies and equipment on a County Maintenance Work Request Crew. Trains to operate standard 5 yard dump truck, and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Trains in the operation of heavier equipment such as front-end loaders, self-propelled belt loaders, steel wheel and pneumatic rollers, motor graders, specialized mowers and backhoes. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment. Performs manual labor in building catch basins, pouring concrete on curbs and raised median, laying pipes for driveways and other drainage structures, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, clearing right-of-ways, paving driveways, making base repairs and repairing bridges. Assists in the installation of driveways; using hand tools, hand tamp, placing aggregates, removing mailboxes and reinstalling and helping place large sections of pipe. Removes litter, debris and dead animals from roadway and right-of-ways. Conducts and documents pre-operation vehicle/equipment inspection. Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance. Trains to operate standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand-spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges. Performs other related job duties as requested or assigned by supervisor. Works after hours during inclement weather, emergencies and assisting on-call personnel.

Minimum and Additional Requirements:

A 10th grade education, and one and one-half (1.5) years of experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.

A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Note: This position requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. However, applicants without a Class A Commercial Driver's License will be considered if no qualified applicants with a Class A Commercial Driver's License are available.

A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement is required within six (6) months of placement in the position.
