SC Department of Public Safety Lead Boiler Operator in York County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Central Energy Supervisor, the Lead Boiler Operator assists in coordinating the operation and maintenance of the Central Heating Plant and auxiliary boiler systems on an assigned shift. Assists in the repair and maintenance of all university boilers during annual summer shutdown. Ensures safe, efficient and continuous operation of boilers; monitors and controls operation of heating plant boilers and related mechanical equipment as well as boilers at other campus locations; and makes adjustments to boiler controls as needed. Functions as crew leader on repair and maintenance projects outside of the heating plant. Oversees routine repair and maintenance by trades workers. Performs more specialized functions associated with the repair and maintenance or replacement of steam traps, pumps, valves, impellers, turbines, motors, etc. Troubleshoots problems in pneumatic and electric boiler controls. Provides daily instruction and supervision of shift trades workers. Assists in maintaining inventory of parts and supplies and establishing work schedules. Works call-back schedules with supervisor on rotating basis. Assists outside contractors as instructed. Analyzes feed water and adds chemicals as instructed. Prepares boilers for annual inspection and testing. Provides coverage when a member of the team calls out or is on vacation.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

High school diploma; four years of experience operating, maintaining and repairing high-pressure steam boilers; and a valid driver's license required. Supervisory experience helpful. Thorough understanding of the techniques and procedures for operating high-pressure steam boilers. Ability to follow written instructions and directions; think and act quickly in an emergency; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, co-workers and supervisors. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
